What exactly is fear of flying and where does it come from?
Even the thought of getting on an airplane leads to negative thoughts and physical symptoms. In addition to a queasy feeling, your pulse starts to race. You are not alone with your fear of flying. Many people, even frequent flyers, know the typical symptoms. You only board the plane under tension and with panic. As a result, you suffer from panic anxiety with nausea and shortness of breath. You also feel helpless when you are in the air. Relaxed flying is not possible.
This is often triggered by bad experiences. Turbulence can occur on any flight. These are not a danger to flight safety. As most people lack the necessary technical understanding, they are unable to classify this situation and the anxiety-inducing situations or a slight fear of flying occur.
How can fear of flying be overcome?
One of the best tips is for those affected to prepare for the flight. To avoid stress, you should be at the airport and board early. With the right seat, you can counteract the anxiety. Try to reserve a seat at the front of the plane. Turbulence is less noticeable here. If you have a specific phobia such as claustrophobia, you should book an aisle seat. Try to distract yourself by reading a book or using the airline's entertainment program. Inform the flight attendants even if you have a mild fear of flying. The team is specially sensitized to this issue as part of their training. However, if your fear becomes stronger, you should take part in a fear of flying seminar. We offer such a seminar in the city of Zurich in collaboration with a former Swiss pilot. A significant part of the course is conducted with the aid of a professional simulator.
