Behind this masterpiece of engineering is the renowned design bureau of Alexander Yakovlev, one of the most important manufacturers of military and civilian aircraft in the former Soviet Union. An interesting historical detail: Oleg Antonov, the brilliant designer of the famous Antonov An-2, worked as deputy chief designer at Yakovlev during World War II. A deep friendship developed between the two pioneers during this time, and Yakovlev later actively supported Antonov in establishing his own design bureau.
